The Westside School fifth and sixth grade boys’ team came into the weekend 3-1, and played a very big and tough St. Al/John team on Saturday at the new Westside School campus. The team won the first set and played a very tough match overall, barely losing 2-1. This was the best overall match to-date, with good bumping, setting, and rallying mixed in with serves. The boys are learning and improving constantly. Jac has really stepped up this year and gives his all on every point, which is something Coach Darren is working with the boys on. In practice and games, Jac is always working on improving specific skills. He has also taken on a leadership role this year, helping keep everyone focused and on task. In Saturday’s match, Jac served 19 points. The boys play their final match this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony in Renton.

The eighth grade girls came into the weekend with a record of 2-2, needing two more wins to qualify for the playoffs. The team beat Holy Rosary 2-0 on Saturday, and then came back and beat Holy Family 2-2 on Sunday, to run their record to 4-2 and qualify for the playoffs. With the seventh grade AAA team winning on Sunday, both the seventh and eighth grade teams are in the playoffs, and they are the first two teams in Westside’s short athletic history to make the playoffs!!!

The eighth grade girls communicated and worked very well together on Saturday, and played well at the net on Sunday. In both games, the team was led by Larisa, who also celebrated her birthday Sunday. Larisa has been our best server all year. She has a low line drive underhand serve, and consistently puts it on the back row. Larisa also passes well from the back, and has been working hard on her hitting. She now hits fairly consistently at the net, tips well, and has started hitting from the back as well. She definitely has the potential to play high school volleyball, and has been a joy to coach.  Congratulations to both Jac and Larisa on their success as the Westside School Athletes’ of the Week!

Last weekend was the penultimate weekend of the Westside School Volleyball regular season. The five Westside volleyball teams wrap up regular season schedules this coming weekend, and two of our teams have qualified for the playoffs!

The fifth grade girls continued an awesome season with a thrilling 2-1 win over Guadalupe at the new Westside School campus last Saturday. The team lost the first game Sunday to a very good Fatima team, but the record sits at 6-1, and the girls, coaches, and families are all having a blast.

The fifth and sixth grade boys’ team lost two close matches over the weekend to St. Al/John and St. Louise, and the record sits at 3-3, going in to the final match. Saturday’s match was the best fans have seen the team play, with good rallying, bumping, and teamwork mixed in with excellent serving.

The seventh grade AA girls played their closest match of the season on Sunday, winning the first set and almost pulling out the match in the second set against Holy Rosary.

The seventh grade AAA girls lost on Saturday with only six players, but beat St. Anthony on Sunday for our fourth win of the season, guaranteeing a playoff berth.

The eighth grade girls came into the weekend needing two wins to guarantee a playoff berth, and handily beat Holy Rosary on Saturday at home, and then beat Holy Family on Sunday afternoon to get to four wins on the season.

The seventh and eighth grade girls making the playoffs are the first two playoff appearances in a team sport in Westside’s short athletic history. Both teams have had great seasons and are well deserving of the success they’ve had. This also reflects well on all the hard work that has gone into starting and building the Westside athletic program from the beginning of the Middle School in 2011 to today.
