Summer Reading for Middle School students

Posted on

Summer is the perfect opportunity for students to explore new authors and novels, and continue to develop a lifelong love of reading. Reading not only builds vocabulary skills, but also exposes students to a world of ideas and information preparing them to become members of their community and global citizens.

The books listed represent a cross section of genres and topics. Students in fifth and sixth grade students are asked to choose two books from two different genres.  Seventh and eighth grade students are asked to read three books from at least two different genres.  After completing their novels, fifth and sixth grade students are expected to write a one to two paragraph summary of each novel. Seventh grade students are expected to write a two to three paragraph summary and analysis of each novel. Students will be asked to share their reflections with their humanities classes, and should complete their summaries before the beginning of the school year.

Eighth grade students need to read three novels and write a brief summary of each.  Eighth grade students will not share their summaries with the class but will turn them in.  Instead, as an introduction to the Writer’s Workshop program, they are asked to write a one page typed essay on the following: Please read the following essay, Creating Our Own Happiness Use this essay as a mentor text and write on either

1. What makes you happy?

2. A time you had a different impression of a situation than what was actually real.

Students will share their essays at the beginning the year.
