Pre-kindergarten information, fall 2014

Posted on

Welcome to Pre-Kindergarten at Westside School! We are very excited to meet new faces, catch up with returning families, and begin the school year. This summer, we have done a lot of reorganization in portable II and have created fun, new learning spaces. There is quite a bit of information to give you, as it is the beginning of the year.

Remember: All school event dates will be posted on the calendar on the school website.

Arrival and Dismissal

  • Our class begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. Students may arrive as early at 8:45 a.m.
  • Pick-up time for pre-kindergarten is 2:45 p.m. Extended Day children are to be picked up no later than 5:00 p.m.

Drop-Off Routine:

  • At the beginning of each day, please assist your child in putting jackets and bags in their designated cubby
  • The parent sign-in sheet is located by our doors. Please sign your child in and out each day with your full legal signature. No initials, please! (DEL licensing requirement)
  • Both you and your child should wash hands upon entering the classroom each morning. This is also a good time for children to use the restroom before starting the day.
  • Please establish a consistent morning drop-off routine, so your child may have a successful transition into the school day. This could include hand washing, starting a book, or finding an activity before giving hugs and kisses. Please keep this routine to a maximum of five minutes. Ask the teachers if you need help during this time.

Pick-up routine:

  • The school day ends at 2:45 p.m. Please pick up your child in the South Campus Pick-Up Zone.
  • Teachers will load children into cars and parents will be asked to sign the child out. We will have a clipboard for sign-out.
  • Students with older siblings will remain in their classroom (free of charge) until the older child’s release time. Your child will be brought to the appropriate zone to meet their sibling (Main Building for first through fourth grades or South Campus for Middle School).
  • Pre-kindergarten students who attend Extended Day Care will be escorted to the appropriate area.

Pick up your child on time. Your child will be anticipating your arrival and will be sad if you are not there at the expected dismissal time. As soon as you know you might be late, please call the main office (206.932.2511.)

During pick-up and drop-off, do not leave siblings in your car. It is illegal to leave unattended minors in the car and we, as teachers, are mandatory reporters. If, for any reason, you are not able to come into the classroom to pick up your child, please discuss this with your teacher and we can make alternate plans.

If your child will be absent or tardy, please email Jessica E. Butler in the main office at attendance@westsideschool.org prior to the absence/tardy. You may also contact us directly.

We encourage carpooling. Please notify your teacher of your child’s carpooling schedule.

Communication and Conferences

Communication is the key to creating a solid partnership between teachers, parents, and administrators. In general, email is the quickest way to communicate between parents and teachers. However, if an email is longer than a few sentences, we encourage all parties to schedule a face-to-face or phone conversation.

Please check the Insider online, our Westside School blog, for regular updates on class activities, announcements, and important dates and events. Remember all school events are posted on the main school calendar.

In addition to our summer conferences we will me with parents in October and April. The sign-up schedule is posted online a few weeks prior to the conference days. However, if an issue, question, or concern arises between the scheduled conference days, please do not hesitate to contact your teacher for a meeting.

Clothing

In pre-kindergarten, we promote children’s independence. We suggest allowing your child to have a say in what they wear to school. However, please keep in mind paint and messy projects occur in our classrooms. Expensive or special clothing should be reserved for home rather than school use.

The children will also be playing outside as well as attending P.E. Comfortable shoes with non-skid soles that are easy for a child to take on and off are encouraged. You are welcome to leave a pair of tennis shoes in your child’s cubby to avoid morning power struggles.

Please bring one to two changes of labeled clothing, including extra underwear, in a gallon Zip-lock bag to keep in the cubbies. We will prompt you several times during the year to check your bags for weather appropriateness and for size as your child grows.

Peanut-Free Campus

Because we have children in our school who have life-threatening allergies, please make sure pack lunches which are free of peanuts.

Nut-free Lunch Ideas

  • Leftovers from last night’s dinner in a thermos
  • Soy-nut butter or sunflower seed butter sandwiches
  • Meat and cheese slices on crackers
  • Hard boiled eggs
  • Pita pockets filled with hummus or cream cheese and veggies
  • For crunch, replace nuts with seeds. Sunflower and pumpkin seeds are kid favorites

Building community and Birthday celebrations

At Westside School, building community is an integral part of our school mission. We will continue our tradition of weekly community meetings in our classrooms.

Birthdays are a special celebration in our community. During our weekly community meetings, we will highlight any birthdays happeing that week. In the classroom, your child will be celebrated with cards from friends, etc. We will be celebrating each child on their designated special day. Please do not bring treats from home. Your child will have other opportunities to share their favorite foods with their classmates.

If you would like to join us on your child’s birthday, we suggest bringing a favorite book or a fun activity to share with your child’s classmates.

Children with summer birthdays will be celebrated as close to their half birthday as possible.

Field Trips

At Westside School, we believe children should be given the opportunity to learn and explore in new environments. When your child’s class is planning a field trip, the teachers will notify you within a reasonable amount of time to ask for chaperons and drivers. Each child will need to provide their own car seats/booster seats for each vehicle. We already have scheduled a trip to see Good Night Moon at the Seattle Children’s Theatre on March 10.

Sunscreen and Medications

During sunny days, it is a good idea to apply sunscreen on your child before school. If you would like sunscreen reapplied at school, please email Kathy Winans (kathyw@westsideschool.org) for the appropriate release form. You will need to provide your own sunscreen which will stay at school, labeled with your child’s name.

We are not authorized to dispense medications to children. However, if your child has a specific medical need (such as Epi-pens), please talk to your teacher and fill out the Medication Administration Authorization form. If you have questions about this form, please contact Kathy Winans (kathyw@westsideschool.org)

Star of the Week

In pre-kindergarten, we have a program to highlight and celebrate each child. Each week one child will be “Star of the Week.”  This is a great way for all of us to get to know your child better. The program enhances a positive self-esteem, encourages a sharing of self with others, and lets each child know he/she is an important individual in our class. At the beginning of the year, your teacher will share a Star of the Week schedule.

Curriculum/Assessments

The pre-kindergarten teachers have developed language arts, math, science, social studies, and motor skills continuum’s. We will use these and other tools as a way to assess your child’s progress and development. We will share this information with you during conferences.

Keep a look out for documentation areas in both classrooms. These spaces will highlight interests and curricular activities in the classroom.

Volunteering

Whether you are volunteering in the classroom or at Westside School, it is imperative you sign in and out through the main office. You will receive a volunteer badge, which you must wear while on site.

You will hear of volunteering opportunities through your teacher, the room parent, and the WPO.

Early Care, Enrichment, and Extended Day

You must be registered to participate in each of these programs. Registration forms can be found on the Westside School website.

Early Care will be in room 202, which is unlocked at 8:30 a.m. each morning. The sign-in sheet will be next to the door. The children will disperse to their individual classrooms at 8:45 a.m.

EDP (Extended Day Program) will be provided from 2:45 – 5:00 p.m. in the pre-kindergarten classrooms. Children will need to be picked up no later than 5:00 p.m. You will charged a late fee for picking up after 5:00 p.m.

If your child is a younger sibling of a Lower School Westside School student, your child can attend Early Care and will also be escorted to the front of the main building to join the sibling at 3:15 p.m. for pick-up.

Checklist for your child’s first day

  • One to two complete changes of clothing (please label all items and bring to school in a gallon Ziploc bag)
  • Extra underpants and socks
  • Jacket, raincoat, or other weather appropriate clothing for outside play, all labeled
  • A labeled water bottle, to be brought to school each day
  • A peanut-free lunch
  • Please apply sunscreen to your child in the morning before school.

Tips for your child’s first day

  • Help your child find his/her cubby. Hang up their coat and put away their belongings.
  • Find and apply your child’s name tag to their clothing
  • Show your child where the bathroom is and wash hands
  • Introduce him/her to the teachers (who will help them if they need it)
  • Take five minutes to explore the classroom. Begin an activity with your child.
  • When you leave, let your child and teacher know. Many children cry when their parents leave and then go on to have a great day. Teachers frequently email parents to let them know they are doing fine after a rough start. Make a plan with your child’s teacher on how to best say good-bye.

Pre-kindergarten Teacher Bios

Brenna Profit

I am a native Washingtonian from Puyallup, Washington. I graduated from Washington State University in 2004, with a degree in Human Development, my emphasis being Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education. I have been teaching at Westside School since 2011. I have experience in various teaching styles and influences, including Reggio Emilia and the project approach.

I am excited to learn with and from each of your children this next school year. I truly believe in empowering children as they explore the people and environment around them. I enjoy listening to children’s questions and interests; giving me the chance to perceive the world in various ways the students see the world. I look forward to learning more about how I may support and enhance your family’s experience at Westside School.

Claudia Ross-Weston

I have been at Westside School since 1984. I have seen tremendous growth and change but I continue to feel the same vibrant essence of the school that existed when we first began. I enjoy young children immensely and am fed by their inquisitiveness and energy. I look forward to a year that allows each child to explore new horizons, learn as they make discoveries and experiment with new materials. I also have enjoyed being a contributing part of so many families at Westside.

I am a fifth generation Washingtonian and have lived for 27 years on Vashon Island with my husband, Al. I graduated from the University of Washington and attended graduate school in education at both Pacific Oaks College in Pasadena, and more recently at Antioch of Seattle.

Our two fabulous assistants, Chris Reardon and Maria Lidgard, will be working with us again this year as well!
