Dear Westside families,
It was indeed a joyous opening of school last week! This is a VERY special year for Westside School. It is our final year in the EC Hughes Building, which has served us so well since 2010. In the fall of 2015, Westside School will be heading to our permanent home. Throughout this year, we will watch our new school grow as we watch your children grow.
Over the last two weeks, you had the opportunity to meet your children’s teacher(s), share information about your child and learn more about our classrooms at our conferences, open house and orientation events.
This week, I know I will see many Lower School parents at our morning Curriculum Coffees, where you will learn more details about our instructional program. I probably will not see many Middle School parents this week (other than those in the fifth grade) because our sixth, seventh and eighth grade students have already left for their fall trips in a flurry of backpacks and water bottles this morning!
Our goal at Westside School is to partner with parents in navigating your child’s journey toward independence by supporting his/her social development, emotional security, intellectual curiosity, and physical growth. With this in mind, we aim to communicate in the most effective way that works for your family – using a variety of platforms including face-to-face communication, email, social media, and our dynamic blog, the Insider Online. If you have not already done so, I encourage you to visit the blog and follow it by entering your email address to receive updates.
Meanwhile, you can usually find me around school, at morning or afternoon drop-off and pickup, at parent coffees, in classrooms, or in my office in the main corridor on the right on your way to the MPR! Our Division Heads, Arionda and Marc, can be found in the main office near the reception desk. I hope to get a chance to meet and speak with each one of you personally in the month of September. We have daily morning parent coffees in the MPR Monday through Thursday, and this year in the south courtyard on Fridays. Join us!
Call anytime. Hope to see you often.
Kate Mulligan, Head of School
To make your lives just a little easier, we have created an email address for you to use when reporting any attendance matter! Please be sure to email firstname.lastname@example.org for matters related to late arrivals, early dismissals, change in drop off or pickup routine, or absences. While you are welcome to copy your child’s teacher or advisor, sending information to this email address will ensure the information is received and shared with the appropriate people each day!
Come see the progress at the new campus! We are hosting tours for all parents to get a chance to have a sneak peek inside the project. Space is limited on each tour and we will add more dates as needed. If these dates do not work for your schedule, contact Sara (email@example.com) to discuss a time that works better for you. Adults only. Construction dress code will be emailed to you before the tour. To sign up for a tour, click here!
Our school year is off to a great start! It is wonderful to see students excited about learning, reconnecting with friends and getting to know new teachers and classmates. Thank you for all your friendly hellos as we get into the rhythm of the year.
A quick reminder: Curriculum Coffees begin this week, with kindergarten teachers presenting on Monday morning. Please check our school calendar to know which day your child’s teacher will be sharing information. I look forward to seeing many of you in the multipurpose room (MPR) at 8:45 a.m.this week.

What a great start to the school year! It was wonderful seeing all the new and returning families last Tuesday night at the Curriculum Night and at the start of classes last week.
Students in sixth through eighth grade hit the road this morning! These trips will give them the chance to connect to each other in the context of outdoor adventures and learning about our local environment. What a great way to begin this year’s journey!
Fifth grade parents, please help your students get packed up for the gear check on Wednesday, September 10. The fifth grade students will have a week of Middle School all to themselves as they become accustomed to the new rhythms of their classes. I look forward to joining them on their fall trip to explore the Nisqually watershed next week. Please check in with me this week if you have any questions about Middle School.
Have a great week!

Family Movie Night
Mark your calendar! Our first movie night, featuring Despicable Me 2, is Friday, September 19 in the MPR. It’s been a tradition for kids to dress in pajamas and bring pillows, blankets and favorite stuffed animals to cuddle. Come enjoy a family friendly movie. Concessions will include pizza and popcorn for purchase. This is not a drop off event. You are responsible for your child. Please help your kids get settled watching the movie and then join us at our hallway tables and enjoy time with grown ups!
Westside School’s Fall Book Fair will be held October 6, 7, and 8! Don’t miss the details!
Cross Country practices are under way and will be ongoing for students who are on campus during fall Middle School trips. Fifth grade students will practice on September 9 and 11. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students will have practice on September 16 and 18. The first meet is on Sunday, September 21 at Woodland Park beginning at 3:15 p.m.
Westside School Pizza Days begin Friday, October 3! Be sure to place your order!
