School Safety Memo

Don Cunningham, Assistant Head of School

Re:    CAMPUS ARRIVAL, DEPARTURE, AND PARKING PLAN

September 4, 2015

At drop-off and pick-up and most other times, please ENTER the Westside School Grounds from 104th Street and EXIT on 34th. Refer to the campus map for visual understanding of parking and traffic flow expectations and street references.

Parking

  • Please drive safely and obey all City of Seattle traffic ordinances, especially those related to parking, speed and cell phone use
  • Good Neighbor Policy: Do not park on the west side of 34th Ave SW (across from the main entrance of the school) under any circumstance – even if it’s just for a short time. Our neighbors use this for residential parking. Let’s be courteous, respectful neighbors.
  • NO PARKING ZONES during Drop-off (8:00 – 9:00 a.m.) and Pick-up (2:30 – 4:00 p.m.):
    • The east side of 34th street in front of the school to the corner of 104th
    • The south side of 104th from 34th to the side entrance
    • The parking lot area directly in front of the school entrance (Lane #1)
  • 15 Minute parking and visitor parking will be Lane #2 in front of the School (see map)
  • If you wish to walk your student into the building at drop-off you may park in the following places:
    • LANE #2 (15 minutes only)
    • There are over 30 parking spaces in the parking lot along 32nd
  • For school-wide events, you may park on the east side of 34th, the south side of 104th, along 32nd, or in the school parking lot if available.

Those parents who choose to park and escort their children into class may do so. We understand many of you will want to do this on the first day of school. Please remember at these times teachers need to be with students, so if you need to talk with a teacher please leave a note and he/she will get back to you as soon as possible to address your concern or set up a conference time

If grandparents, nannies or other family members or friends are dropping off and/or picking up your children, please make sure they have a copy of this memo and understand our procedures! Drivers who do not understand the protocols can create unsafe situations for themselves and others.

  • Pre-kindergarten through fourth grade students with Middle School siblings will be held in EDP without charge and given a snack before being brought out to Middle School pick-up.
  • Do not use cell phones while driving to actively pick-up or drop-off students at Westside School
  • Remember students are only allowed to leave with people who are listed on the Emergency Contact/Release Authorization Form unless you submit a hand-written note to or email the teacher AND attendance@westsideschool.org indicating otherwise. Please let your child’s teacher (and your child) know if there will be changes to the afternoon pick-up routine.
  • Any students remaining after all the cars leave will go to the lobby until their ride arrives. If an emergency arises that will delay you, please contact the school immediately at 206.932.2511. The Extended Day program daily rate will be charged after a 15 minute grace period.
  • Do not leave children in any car unattended, even momentarily. This is a safety issue the school cannot allow.
  • Leave all pets at home or in the car during pick-up. Our students love pets, but the novelty creates confusion and slows down the arrival and departure process. Also, there are a number of students and parents in our school community with severe animal allergies.

  • All walkers and bikers MUST have a signed parental consent form on file
  • Drop-off and pick-up times are the most dangerous times of the day for pedestrians and bikers in and around the school campus. For this reason, bikers and walkers will not be released to go home until AFTER the Middle School vehicle pick-up line has ended. This will be around 3:40 p.m.
  • Bikes are stored in the bike rack in front of the school.  A lock is recommended.
