Westside School Middle School Spanish students hosted their first ever Mercado, and what a huge success is was! At each booth in the marketplace there was something for shoppers to learn and something to buy. Booths included a taco stand with homemade tortillas that taught its customers about the history of tortillas and how to make them, a CD stand that taught customers about different genres of Latin American music, a salsa tasting booth that taught its customers about various types of chilies and salsas in Latin American cuisine, maracas, pinatas, empandadas, tamales, tostadas, many arts and crafts, and live music and dance performances.

Fifth and sixth grade student booths were centered around themes of Latin American culture they have studied in class this year. Seventh and eighth grade students had the opportunity to chose themes of interest to them they wanted to learn more about. Each presentation included an introduction in Spanish and a more extensive presentation in English. Students were responsible for researching their topics, creating a visual component, practicing their presentations, and planning all the details to make sure their booths ran smoothly.

Middle School Chinese students exhibited their learning in Chinese language and culture during the Exhibition of Learning last night by sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm with their families. Students showcased a wide variety of projects incorporating visuals, audios, and acting. Work included calligraphy, a look at Chinese vs. American festivals, a Chinese podcast, charades and more. Each family received a Red Envelope to collect treasures from the various presentations.
Muchas gracias and 谢谢 to all of the families who came to support the Mercado and Mandarin Exhibition of Learning and for celebrating joyful learning with us!
