MIDDLE SCHOOL HEAD
Marc Saks will be out from Wednesday, March 30 through Friday, April 8 in order to have surgery on a shoulder he injured playing too hard on the Middle School Snow/Ski Day in February. Please join me in sending Marc warm thoughts for a speedy recovery. During his absence, Susannah Muench will be the Acting Head of Middle School. As always, if you have a classroom issue, please contact the teacher directly; for other family or student issues, your best avenue of communication from home to school will be through your child’s advisor. If you need help with any of those communications, or if you need assistance with a school-wide issue or challenge, you may reach out to Susannah or to me. Susannah will also be present on Middle School Student Portfolio Review days if you need to check in with her about all things “Middle School.”
Our neighborhood block captain and several of our neighbors have expressed a concern about Westside School parents driving too fast through the neighborhood – particularly on 34th Ave. between 104th and 100th. We encourage you to use 35th as the arterial route to Westside School, and to be mindful of posted speed limits and school zone warnings. Your cooperation is requested for the safety of our children and out of respect for our neighbors.
PICKUP TRAFFIC PATTERN
Due to the amazing cooperation of our families, and our entire staff, our pickup process is going smoothly and efficiently. I do, however, want to send a friendly reminder that the correct way to approach the Westside School pickup line is to join the line by driving up 34th from the south. If this means going to 106th in order to join from the appropriate direction, we sincerely hope you take the time to do so. Thank you to all of you who already do this. After you join the line from 34th, it wraps around 104th to the entrance of the school.
Here is why we are asking for your cooperation:
1. Approaching on 34th from the north and making a U-turn in front of the school is extremely dangerous to walkers and drivers attempting to negotiate an exit from the school. There have already been many near misses.
2. Joining the line by cutting in on 104th disrupts the pickup order that has already been conveyed to the children waiting in the lobby for their cone assignments. This confuses the children and causes chaos on the sidewalk when we want a calm, friendly, orderly and safe pickup.
I truly appreciate your understanding that our procedures are in place in order to meet the requirements set out by the City of Seattle in our Master Use Permit, to orchestrate pick up for 345 children after school efficiently and safely; and to make sure each child leaves school with an authorized parent or guardian. Thank you!
Teachers are looking forward to the the upcoming Parent/Teacher conferences and conversations with you this Thursday, March 31 and Friday, April 1.
