Westside School is fortunate to have many talented, passionate, creative, and engaged faculty and staff. Today, we’re highlighting (and hearing from) someone who has touched every part of our community. Beginning in 1983 when her eldest child began attending pre-kindergarten, Westside School was part of Kathy Winan’s life. She has held many titles and roles over the years, and today our Office Manager and Registrar shares her history and what’s next.
Working at Westside School has been like going to school for me too. When I started, we had one computer for the school and all I knew how to do was type a document. I didn’t have a clue what a database or an excel spreadsheet was or what you did with a floppy disk (many of you will have no idea what that is.) I couldn’t help but learn and grow working in an environment surrounded by innovative, creative and passionate educators.
For 21 years Kathy has been the reassuring voice, the historian, the story teller, the gentle touch when a child was ill or hurt, and the person everyone could count on – no matter what.
After a long and difficult decision process, I will be retiring at the end of June. Taking this next step in life is bittersweet. While I am excited to have the freedom to travel, visit family often, get more exercise, and be able to make plans without restrictions, it will be hard to leave this community.
While it couldn’t be called a direct quote, this perhaps sums up best how Kathy lives and what she wishes for everyone whose life she has touched:
My life has been enriched by the interactions I have had with the families I have come to know over the years and it has been a privilege to witness so many young children grow into poised, confident, and accomplished young adults.
Kathy, you will be missed and life at Westside School will not be the same without you. We are beyond grateful for your laughter, your spirit, your dedication, your integrity and your love for this community. Congratulations and best wishes for a joyous retirement!
