Salmon Celebration

Each year, second grade spends time learning about salmon in the Pacific Northwest. In line with their studies, each student wrote a poem about salmon as well as used their artistic skills to create decorative paper fish. Each fish, along with samples of the poems, were placed together to create a beautiful painting celebrating togetherness and the focus of their studies, salmon.

Thank you, Jen Howe and Margery Lamden!

Hands of Love

Kindergarten artists used their drawing skills to contribute unique tiles composed of their favorite colors and mediums. The tiles were then mounted in the shape of “hands of love”, resulting in a beautiful piece about collaboration, peace, and love.

Kai C. and Nikhil reflect on growth, friendships, and what’s next

In anticipation of our 35th Celebration, we’ve asked some of our eighth grade students to share their Westside Story. Westside School is what it is today because of 35 years of stories. We’d love to hear yours.

35-years-of-ws-stories-logo

My journey at Westside School began when I was five. I started in Marsha’s kindergarten class, where I was pretty shy and quiet. Over the next few years, Westside helped me grow as a learner, through teaching me how to interact and how to learn. Throughout the years, Westside School has continued to help me learn and grow.

Shared by Kai C., Class of 2017

When I came to Westside School in the third grade, it obviously took some time to find my group. I tried out different cliques, different people, and finally found my people in fifth grade. Since I had come to Westside, some of my close friends had followed me. In fifth grade, when the last one came, I started to form a group. I made friends with awesome acquaintances. I got to know someone new. I even made peace with my sworn enemy from last year. We formed a group, bonding over passing interests like Minecraft and comics and the like. In sixth grade, we got our last and final entry into the group, a returning friend. Since then, our group has remained together. It’s going to be hard not hanging out with them as much, but I don’t think heading to high school will end this completely. I think what we’ve built here will survive.

Kindergarten students weave fabric studies and snuffle mats into a service project for Seattle Humane Society

Humane Society visit 3.jpg

Westside School’s kindergarten classes have been studying fabric in science. When we heard the Seattle Humane Society needed some fabric mats, we decided to team up for an adorable service project! The kids spent the last two weeks weaving snuffle mats designed to help eliminate boredom for the shelter dogs. Together we created ten mats for the dogs, and were fortunate to have some extra visitors come to campus when the Seattle Humane Society came to pick up the mats.

Zelda, a trained therapy dog, as well as several adoptable cats came to meet the students and interact for a fun filled afternoon. Kindergarten students had the chance to learn about safe interactions with animals, and how to approach an unfamiliar animal. The students loved getting to pet the animals, and see some of Zelda’s many talents.

Congratulations to the kindergarten classes and teaching team for doing something wonderful for the animals!

EXHIBITION OF LEARNING – CANCELED

Due to a very packed spring schedule, the Lower School has elected to cancel the Exhibition of Learning scheduled for this Thursday, May 26. We hope you enjoy the variety of student work that will be on display during the Spring Fling on June 2nd at 6:30 p.m. as well as the many individual classroom presentations and gatherings that are scheduled throughout our final weeks.

FIELD DAY

Ask our kids and they will tell you – Field Day is one of their favorite activities. This year Field Day will take place on Friday, June 3, and as always, we need our parents help to make this possible. We start with a pizza lunch and awards presented by Emily Gussin, followed by the always-popular fourth grade donut-eating spectacle! Games will then begin as groups move through activities and we will finish with popsicles.

As mentioned, this event is not possible without volunteers so please sign up now!!!!
